Now days it’s very common to install access control systems at commercial, corporate, educational premises to control access to limited and permitted personals only at desired premises. For example if you have office of say 2000 sq foots. You want to ensure none of your customers enters where you RND unit is, but door of unit is just beside of you entry door. Solution for such and similar situations is to put access control system at that door.
Access control system name suggests the system. This system commonly has got three component. Those are controller, readers, lock, and most important verification device. Variation mechanism may be RFID or Mifare card reader or fingerprint.
Controller is brain of access control system. It stores all required data, it verifies data, control door lock even communicates with computer for data interchange. It has got key pad and display user-friendly operations. In most of the cases you can program controller from your computer. Now days, it’s very easy to program it using GUI provided by manufacturer. TCP/IP protocol is used for communication for most of available controllers. I.e. one LAN cable from any of data I/O port from your network. You have to set up IP and other network parameters in controller. This set up is to be done using keypad and display on controller. Access Controller has inbuilt real time clock and small battery which retains time and date of device, even when Access controller is power off. There is an arrangement on it to connect card reader and lock.
Readers are the input devices for access control system. They don’t process any anything there work is to forward whatever the read using inbuilt sensor. If we talk about RFID card reader, it reads RFID card in its range (range of normal RFID card reader is 4 to 8 centimeter). Sends corresponding card number to controller. If it is a biometric fingerprint reader it scans fingerprint image and sends it to controller for verification.
Locks are electromagnetic locks which we generally see at any ATM door. This lock works on electro magnet principle which we have studied in school science. Mechanical arrangement of electromagnet and Still armature strip provides great strength of locking. These locks are classified according to their power. Generally used electromagnetic locks are of 600 Lbs. if 600 lbs electromagnetic lock is installed properly on wooden door of 1.5 inch thickness. Someone tries to open door forcefully, in that case door will break but lock wont fail. I want to convenes these locks are really good enough to restrict entry or exit from desired premises.
We will see more about fingerprints, RFID Cards, Mifare Cards and more advance functions of Access Control System in next article on same website same category.
